Our Approach

Multi-Sector Collaboration:

Uniting Key Stakeholders

Go Together operates on a collaborative model that brings together key stakeholders from various sectors to strengthen cancer care strategies across sub-Saharan Africa. This alliance includes ministries of health, which play a vital role in shaping national policies and infrastructure for oncology care. Academic institutions contribute by helping train the next generation of oncology professionals, ensuring a skilled workforce equipped to address the growing burden of cancer. Industry leaders provide cutting-edge technology, expertise, and innovation to enhance treatment accessibility and effectiveness. Additionally, non-governmental organizations and international agencies support patient care, advocacy, and policy development, fostering a holistic approach to cancer care and prevention.

By uniting public and private sectors with academia, Go Together creates sustainable solutions for oncology workforce development, ensuring long-term impact and improved health outcomes across the region.

Multi-Country Initiative:

Phased Implementation for Maximum Impact

Go Together’s approach to strengthening cancer care in sub-Saharan Africa is structured through a phased country implementation model, ensuring that each participating nation receives tailored support based on its unique healthcare needs. In Phase 1, the initiative will launch efforts in Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, and Eswatini, focusing on workforce training in oncology and radiation therapy, strengthening national cancer care policies, and expanding access to life-saving treatment. These early efforts serve as a foundation for broader regional impact.

Building on the lessons learned from Phase 1, Phase 2 and beyond we will scale the alliance to at least 12 partner countries across sub-Saharan Africa. By leveraging successful strategies and refining approaches based on country-specific challenges, Go Together aims to establish a sustainable model for oncology workforce development, ensuring long-term improvements in cancer care accessibility and treatment outcomes throughout the region-going far together.

Go Together Goals

Our three goals to help achieve the mission of Go Together are:

1. Establish a joint learning, training, and knowledge exchange with collaborative activities that leverage collective strengths and build capacity in the region.

  • Facilitate national and regional interactions in cancer care and prevention for stakeholders to learn what the host government wants in oncology workforce development
  • Jointly assess training needs in each host country
  • Create training and knowledge exchange platforms for alliance members and host countries to learn together

 2. Train healthcare workers on cancer care and prevention according to the country’s needs

Target audiences for training:

a) Healthcare workers already taking care of cancer patients

  • Create country-specific training for healthcare providers who are already caring for or want to care for cancer patients, using existing partners working in each country when possible

b) All healthcare workers in referral or district hospitals

  • Develop oncologic emergency training for ER and all hospital practitioners

c) Healthcare workers at primary hospitals and clinics

  • Develop trainings aimed at reducing the time from patient presentation to the time of a confirmed cancer diagnosis
  • Fine needle aspiration and core biopsy training
  • Training healthcare workers on screening and early detection (especially related to cervical cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer)

 3. Engage local and international stakeholders with their solutions

  • Promote and applaud existing partnerships and efforts that train or expand the oncology workforce
  • Advocate for more long-term training opportunities across all oncology-related healthcare disciplines
  • Showcase solutions that address the oncology workforce shortage
